Putin continued, according to an English translation in state media: "They push us to the red line... we start to react, and then they frighten their population." He said that in this way the authorities in Washington are using "simple tactics" to keep the American people in fear so that the escalation of threats can continue.

The Russian president said: “They [Western leaders] are simply making their own people afraid that we will attack someone there, under the pretext of the mythical Russian threat.
“The tactics are very simple: they push us to a 'red line' from which we cannot retreat, we start reacting and then they immediately frighten their population - before it was the Soviet threat and now it is the Russian one Threat."
He warned not only that Russia and other independent nations are facing Western-sponsored "hybrid wars" but also that NATO is increasing its forces in Europe near Russia's borders.
"The number of American troops in Europe has already exceeded 100,000," he said, noting that Washington's presence in the Asia-Pacific region has also increased.
Putin further suggested in his comments that while Moscow is currently in compliance with the INF Treaty, even after Washington's withdrawal, any restrictions imposed could be lifted immediately if the US begins to use its medium- and short-range missiles in violation of the now-defunct treaty to station the contract that has been entered into.
“If the United States begins deploying such systems, all of our voluntary restrictions will be lifted,” he warned. “The relocation and stationing of these missile systems in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region is already being practiced.”
US President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday he could immediately reverse the Biden administration's policy allowing Kiev to fire US missiles at Russia. He has promised to quickly de-escalate and negotiate peace.
