I like simple solutions for communications. What I mean, is that I love having my own IRC server and I also love doing the same with XMPP. One of my friends ridiculed me and suggested Matrix. While I don't mind using Matrix, I don't see what all the fuss is about.
However, I did setup my own Matrix server and I found lots of connection timeouts at times. Matrix wasn't as smooth as the aforementioned tools. The server I used had 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Perhaps I needed more RAM? Anyway I will take simple solutions, like IRC and or XMPP over Matrix any day and since I have set up all three, I think I'm qualified to make the choice.
